Commitment to sustainability

We want sustainable development to be a priority for everyone here. That means building it into our everyday business.

We’re proud to be thought of as industry leaders in sustainable development – and we’re proud of the awards we’ve won that show our commitment. We want to involve our people as much as possible in sustainability initiatives that will have a positive and lasting impact on the environment and in the communities where we operate – both at home and in our many destinations.

We want our people to rate us as a leader in sustainability and we measure our progress on this through a global opinion survey. Take a look below at some of the comments from our most recent survey:

“I love the energy of the company and that it’s a driver in sustainability. A company with vision is a great place to work’’

“We are forward thinking in terms of ensuring our industry is viable in the long term and benefits the places we travel to’’

“I like the fact the company is succeeding with performance and sustainability together’’

“I can feel proud to say I work for a company that actively tries to care and provide for the communities it impacts’’

Our Sustainable Holidays Plan

Our Sustainable Holidays Plan shows just how we integrate our environmental and social principles into the way we do business – performance measures, processes and customer proposition. It sets out four ambitious goals underpinned by 20 commitments in our priority areas - taking care in destinations, reducing carbon emissions, and engaging our colleagues and customers in sustainability. Find out more about our Sustainable Holidays Plan here.

Getting involved

There are many opportunities to get involved in environmental and community work - we organise sustainability awareness-raising events right across the Group. For example, people in many of our destinations supported the Travel Foundation’s ’Make Holidays Greener’ month in Jul and as part of that, we helped organise a high-profile beach clean-up in Zante, attended by the British Ambassador to Greece.

Our people also support a range of community volunteering initiatives worldwide, whether it’s TUI India taking part in local school projects in Delhi or A&D Sector colleagues improving the infrastructure of a school in the Dominican Republic. TUI UK & Ireland’s overseas volunteering scheme matches volunteers’ skills with sustainable tourism projects in our key destinations and recent projects include keeping Cyprus’ beaches clean, customer research in Majorca on sustainable excursions, and protecting turtles in Mexico.

Green Ideas Factory

Our Group-wide Green Ideas Factory competition gives our people the chance to get creative about sustainability and submit their ideas on how we can be ‘greener’ whilst improving our business. The winners of our most recent competition saw their ideas come to life as Jetairfly introduced electric cars for ground staff at Brussels Airport. With zero CO2 emissions, the cars offer energy savings of 70% and reduction in maintenance of 30% and the project will be monitored to evaluate whether we can roll it out across TUI. Our Green Ideas Factory saw 120 sustainability concepts submitted from colleagues across 18 countries with nearly 1,500 people voting for their favourite ideas. 10 finalists went on to develop their concept with the help of mentors from our business and Forum for the Future.
